The most anterior outer surface region of the blastula or gastrula stage embryos around the animal pole. Animal cap cells are derived mostly from ectodermal cells and typically develop into atypical epidermis. In explant animal cap assays, for instance using Xenopus embryos, animal cap can be induced into other types of tissues.
